Toulouse-Lautrec, Henri Marie |
In one of Montmartre’s famous cabarets two non-professional dancers are deftly characterized. One dim and hesitating the other at the alert, they face each other across the floor like fencers, awaiting the opening bars of the music. The Moulin Rouge was a scene of popular dancing as well as a showplace for professional song and dance stars like La Goulue, Jane Avril and Yvette Guilbert whose silhouettes and vital gestures Lautrec memorialized. |
