One dim and hesitating the other at the alert, they face each other across the floor like fencers, awaiting the opening bars of the music. The Moulin Rouge was a scene of popular dancing as well as a showplace for professional song and dance stars like La Goulue, Jane Avril and Yvette Guilbert whose silhouettes and vital gestures Lautrec memorialized. |
